I was genuinely surprised when I first discovered the We Are Rewind company and their modern cassette player. I've always appreciated the fusion of modern technology with vintage quality, and this product is a perfect example of how well that can be executed.
In this review, I'll discuss both the positives and some potentially annoying aspects of this device, as well as how it compares to other similar products.
A Quick Note
Although I am a professional concert pianist, I write all product reviews based solely on my personal experience as a user. I don't write as an influencer, a salesperson, or a technical expert. Consider this review as if a friend or neighbor were sharing their honest opinion without any vested interest in whether you buy the product or not.
However, a device like the Rewind cassette player introduces a new dimension to music listening – one that revives the authentic experience of enjoying physical media while remaining highly portable.
The device itself is incredibly lightweight, roughly the size of an average tablet but slightly thicker. It fits comfortably in the pocket of a winter jacket and easily slides into any bag, even smaller ones. Of course, you’ll need to carry cassettes with you, but considering their lightweight and compact form factor, this isn’t much of an inconvenience. Each cassette holds two sides, typically an hour of music in total, meaning that just a few tapes can provide a full day of varied listening on the go.
Battery Life – I honestly can’t remember the last time I charged it. The device uses Bluetooth, requires minimal charging time, and lasts impressively long.
Offline Functionality – No internet or phone needed. There was an instance when my phone battery died, yet my music continued playing through Bluetooth headphones. I hadn’t experienced that kind of ‘freedom’ in over a decade.
More Attention to Music – Since finding specific tracks requires more effort, you naturally pay more attention to the music itself rather than skipping around mindlessly.
Versatile Connectivity – It supports both wired and Bluetooth connections, allowing me to hook it up to high-quality home sound systems effortlessly.
Affordable Price – Given that similar retro-style music gadgets often cost upwards of €300–€400, it’s impressive that the Rewind cassette player is available new for around €150.
Finding Cassettes – It can be difficult to locate high-quality cassettes in good condition.
Physical Limitations – Unlike streaming services with virtually unlimited access, carrying physical media means a limited selection.
Volume Limitations – Even with high-end speakers or headphones, the maximum volume output is noticeably lower than today’s digital standards, especially if using older cassettes. Additionally, the inherent tape hiss might be a dealbreaker for younger listeners accustomed to pristine digital sound.
I frequently receive different music-related gadgets for testing, and given my busy schedule, I rarely use them extensively in my personal time. However, I found myself consistently reaching for the Rewind cassette player for a while. Eventually, due to sheer convenience, I returned to modern streaming services, but I thoroughly enjoyed the unique experience this device provided.
For audiophiles, lovers of ‘60s, ‘70s, and ‘80s music, or anyone who appreciates vintage tech, this cassette player offers something truly special. At an affordable price point, it delivers a different and refreshing way to enjoy music.
Check out We Are Rewind and their modern cassette player – you might be surprised at how much you enjoy the experience!
